La Churreria

La Churreria Cafe is a newly open cafe in the West End specialising in mexican dessert and coffee. The churros come plain or filled with chocolate, nutella, jam or dulce de leche (caramel). They also have bite size churros, and a bowl made of churro with 1 scoop of ice cream drizzled with chocolate or caramel.

We tried a plain (sugar & cinnamon) and a nutella filled churro to start. Mao enjoyed them so we actually got one more filled with caramel this time.  The churros are filled per order. At the time of our visit, there was 1 person working. If it got busy I could see orders getting back logged as she took the orders, prepped the churros and made the drinks. They even have a freshly pressed orange juice machine there!

WHAT WE TRIED:

  • Plain Churro (Sugar & Cinnamon) | $2.25

  • Filled Churro | $3.25

  • Mexicano | $2.95

They use beans from Los Beans. It's the only company in Western Canada that grows and roasts their own coffee in small batches. All the coffee is grown in Chiapas and Oaxaca, Mexico.

If you're looking to try something different. They have a coffee drink called Mexicano which is basically a spiced up Americano with cinnamon, piloncillo (made of cane sugar) and chili flakes. If you prefer a bit more of a spice just let the staff know. They can adjust it to your palette! She was good with following up with me asking if there was too little or too much of a certain ingredient. In terms of visual appeal, don't expect anything photogenic.

The cafe is modern, minimalist with wood furniture, white walls and large windows for natural light.

OVERALL IMPRESSION OF La Churreria:

La Churreria churros are decent. I preferred the plain ones more than the filled ones. I felt the filled churros didn't have enough sauce inside them but Mao still enjoyed them. I would be interested in coming back to try the churro bowl, churro bites and freshly squeezed orange juice per order. If there is anything you love at La Churreria and think we should try it next time, feel free to contact us!

The Bad:

  • Not really enough filling for the filled churros

The Good:

  • Clean and approachable cafe to hang out

  • Very friendly staff
