The 2023 Volvo XC90 Recharge represents Volvo's commitment to electrification. It's part of the brand's strategy to offer only electric or hybrid vehicles by 2025. The Recharge variant combines a powerful plug-in hybrid powertrain with the already luxurious and spacious XC90 platform. The T8 powertrain now boasts even more electric-only range and a revised engine, providing better efficiency and improved acceleration. On the outside, it receives subtle updates, including a redesigned grille and refreshed headlights, maintaining its elegant and unmistakable Volvo aesthetics.
The 2023 XC90 Recharge delivers a compelling and refined driving experience. The plug-in hybrid powertrain combines a supercharged and turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, producing a robust 400 horsepower. This results in smooth and responsive acceleration, ensuring effortless merging on highways and confident overtaking. The electric-only mode allows for silent and emission-free urban driving, making it a versatile choice. The XC90's ride is composed, with a well-tuned suspension that strikes a balance between comfort and handling. Its precise steering and stable road manners, making it a pleasure to drive both in city traffic and on long highway journeys.
INTERIOR FOR DRIVER: 8.5/10
Step inside the XC90 Recharge, and you'll be enveloped in a Scandinavian sanctuary of luxury and technology. High-quality materials, such as wood, leather, and metal accents, are used generously throughout the cabin. The seats are incredibly comfortable, providing excellent support for long drives. The infotainment system is dominated by a tablet-like touchscreen that's intuitive to use, while the optional Bowers & Wilkins sound system fills the cabin with exceptional audio quality. I still wish the camera system would enable being able to display 2 views simultaneously. It also introduces new sustainable interior materials, aligning with Volvo's green initiatives.
INTERIOR FOR PASSENGERS: 8/10
Passenger comfort is paramount in the XC90 Recharge. The second-row seats offer plenty of legroom and can be optionally equipped with built-in booster seats for families. The available six- or seven-passenger configurations cater to various needs. However, the third-row seats are best suited for children or shorter journeys due to limited legroom. Noise insulation is superb, creating a tranquil environment inside the cabin. I appreciate the attention to detail and the focus on passenger comfort, which is crucial for long family road trips or executive transportation.
