2021 Mercedes Benz S580

For this week’s review we’ve gotten our hands on the 2021 Mercedes Benz S580. This is the newest version of the S-class and that’s a big deal because they set the standard for luxury sedans. The S-class is a window into the future of Mercedes for the tech and styling that will influence the rest of their line up.

Disclosure: Mercedes Benz Canada provided me with the 2021 Mercedes Benz S580 for a week to test drive, and photograph. All photos in this blog post was taken by me. #MercedesBenzS580

ACCELERATION: 9/10

  • 4.0L V8 biturbo with mild hybrid drive

  • 496 HP @ 5500 / 516 lb-ft @ 2000-4000

  • 9G-TRONIC 9-speed

  • 0-100km in 4.0 seconds

  • The acceleration is crazy for such a big & heavy car

BRAKING: 9.5/10

  • 107 ft to stop from 60 mph to 0

  • Very short stopping distance considering the curb weight

HANDLING: 7.5/10

  • Grip is incredible however this is tuned towards the softer side of things so it won’t be as direct feeling

RIDE: 8/10

  • Air suspension bounds softly over road imperfections

  • However your ride comfort will depend on how you option out the wheels. If you go with the low profile tires, you’ll gain better grip/handling but sacrifice ride quality

  • Unfortunately it does not have the predictive road scanning to adjust air suspension in their other cars

ECONOMY: 8.5/10

  • 17/25/20 MPG (City/Highway/Combined)

  • Mild hybrid system helps with improving fuel efficiency

CABIN NOISE: 10/10

  • This is the quietest vehicle I’ve ever tested

EXTERIOR: 9/10

  • Has a big, imposing, luxurious, classy and timeless look.

  • It’s going to turn a lot of heads.

INTERIOR FOR DRIVER: 10/10

  • Front seats are incredible comfortable and has a cushion on the headrests

  • Both front seats have an impressive amount of configuration

  • Mercedes massage seats are the best

  • Seats automatically inflate and deflate when cornering to help your body stay in place

  • Has an optional 4 wheel steering system

  • The interface has moved towards touch. I personally found the steering wheel touch controls harder to use than the last generation with buttons. The other touch interface steering wheel is a lot better than the one in the E class with 2 sticks

  • Even the seat controls are touch buttons. They work pretty well even though I prefer the older design

  • Air vents you can control how much air comes out of each with 3 levels of settings

  • To continue this touch interface design the bar below the infotainment is also touch and give haptic feedback when pressing it

  • The instrument cluster is highly configurable

INTERIOR FOR PASSENGERS: 10/10

  • Passengers will benefit from from all the safety features and very comfortable and roomy!

  • Rear passengers can get the pillow headrest and are 4 way adjustable

  • Motorized rear sun shades

  • Rear seats also get 3 seat memory slots, plus they’re heated and ventilated

  • For the sunroof you can open just one if desired

  • In the arm rest had a tablet that can be taken out to control certain things in the car

Combined Legroom:

  • 90.8 - S-Maybach

  • 85.8 - 7-Series

  • 85.8 - A8L

  • 85.5 - S-Class

  • 85.0 - Panamera LWB

  • 85.1 - G90

  • 79.9 - LS 500

  • 79.0 - Panamera

  • 77.8 - E-Class

2nd Row Headroom:

  • 39.4 - S-Maybach

  • 39.4 - S-Class

  • 39.0 - 7-series

  • 38.5 - A8

  • 38.0 - G90

  • 37.6 - E-Class

  • 37.3 - LS 500

  • 37.1 - Panamera LWB

  • 37.1 - Panamera

INTERIOR STORAGE:7/10

  • Power lift trunk

  • Has a hook to hang bags

  • 12.3 Cu Ft

  • Additional storage under the load floor

  • Has a dual door ski pass through to minimize noise

  • There is wasted space on the sides and the trunk hinge placement could make it trick loading larger items

OVERALL IMPRESSION OF THE 2021 Mercedes Benz s580:

I thought I knew what a luxury car was until I got into the S580. It is obvious they had a mission to make it comfortable and quiet. This is on an entirely different level and even makes the 5 series and E-class look like nothing! While it is the most luxurious Mercedes, it is also their safest!

The S580 is incredible expensive if you get carried away with options but if you’re thinking about purchasing an S-Class then probably price isn’t an issue. It ultra luxurious, and exclusive.

You can read reviews and look at photos / videos online but you really need to sit in one and be driven around to understand how ultra luxury this is. The ride is so comfortable that there should be a warning for the driver that they may fall asleep when driving long durations. For me this is a tough vehicle to review as I haven’t tested the ultra luxury options from the competition. I’m simply blown away by how amazing this is. If I have the finances to own one I would but this was a great way for me to look into the future and see what will be added to the next A-Class, C-Class and E-Class.
