2022 Mercedes AMG GT53

For this week’s review we’ve gotten our hands on the 2022 Mercedes AMG GT53, a 4 door variant of legendary GT coupe.

Disclosure: Mercedes Benz Canada provided me with the 2022 Mercedes AMG GT53 for a week to test drive, and photograph. All photos in this blog post was taken by me. #MercedesAMGGT53

ACCELERATION: 9/10

  • 3.0L inline-6 turbo with mild hybrid drive

  • 429 HP @ 6900 / 384 lb-ft

  • AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9-speed

  • 0-100km in 4.5 seconds

  • If you want a faster version check out the GT63S E-Performance which has 830 HP!

BRAKING: 9/10

  • 151 ft to stop from 70 mph to 0

  • Great stopping power but not grabby feeling in stop and go traffic.

HANDLING: 9/10

  • Handling is sharp and steering is instant

RIDE: 8/10

  • Comfortable when in the right drive mode

ECONOMY: 8.5/10

  • 19/25/22 MPG (City/Highway/Combined)

CABIN NOISE: 8/10

  • High end cabin with good control over the road and wind noise. Of course you can still hear the engine and exhaust notes but that’s part of the charm!

EXTERIOR: 8/10

  • Coupe like styling for a sedan, but doesn’t have that predator look like the coupe

INTERIOR FOR DRIVER: 8.5/10

  • Center console is really unique and I like how it’s basically a bunch of hotkeys for quick access.

  • Driving the car is so satisfying, and surprises me that a big 4 door sedan can have this great of a performance.

  • It uses the last gen infotainment which I prefer using so I still have lots of physical controls.

  • It has a traditional car shifter in the centre console which I prefer over the windshield wiper shifter.

  • I really like the steering wheel feel, and the custom dials are great however the two chopsticks that go across the middle don’t work great being all touch instead of having physical clicks buttons.

INTERIOR FOR PASSENGERS: 7/10

  • Headroom is compromised due to the sloping roofline.

  • Seats fold down in a 40/20/40

  • Will be cramp if fitting 3 passengers

  • The rear seats don’t have a wow factor for being a car that costs 155K

INTERIOR STORAGE:6/10

  • 18.9 Cu Ft

  • Sport back style power lift trunk

  • While the opening is wide, the opening is quite high up and the load floor is deep. In real world use, this was a huge negative. For heavy items you have to lift it quite high to get it out but in a traditional hatchback or suv the load floor is usually flush with the opening so you can pull items out easily.

OVERALL IMPRESSION OF THE 2022 Mercedes AMG Gt53:

The 2022 Mercedes AMG GT53 offers crazy accelerations, and sporty handling but it’s a very niche car. For the money, there are more impressive options to flex your status like their S-Class which will have much more of a wow factor.

Mechanically, this is based off the E-Class wagon and not the GT sports car. To be honest when I booked the GT53, I was super excited thinking its the coupe however this 4 door styling just doesn’t have that apex predator look that the coupe commands.

That being said there won’t be many of these on the road either so this is going be unicorn out on the road.
