2022 Mitsubishi Outlander

For this week’s review we’ve gotten our hands on the all new and designed 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander. Big updates make it an appealing contender in this competitive segment! This is their first vehicle in the alliance and also their best selling name plate.

Disclosure: Mitsubishi Canada provided me with the 2022 Outlander for a week to test drive, and photograph. All photos in this blog post was taken by me. #MitsubishiOutlander

ACCELERATION: 6/10

  • 2.5L DOHC MIVEC 4-Cylinder Engine

    181 HP @ 6000 / 181 @ 3600 lb-ft

  • CVT

  • 8.6 second 0-100 km/hr

  • Day to day city driving which requires overtaking other drivers and changing lanes can be tricky to get the acceleration needed to do that

BRAKING: 7/10

  • 70-100 mph in 171 ft

HANDLING: 8/10

  • Considering it’s a 7 seater SUV the handling feels surpisingly good!

RIDE: 9/10

  • Overall very comfortable ride on various terrains.

ECONOMY: 8/10

  • 24/30/26.5 MPG (City/Highway/Combined)

CABIN NOISE: 9/10

  • Pretty quiet overall because double pane glass windows

EXTERIOR: 8.5/10

  • The boxy and angular look is attractive and has a space age vibe. I think it looks better than it’s Nissan cousin. It reminds me of a Range Rover front end with a BMW rear. Pretty boss looking

INTERIOR FOR DRIVER: 8/10

  • The interior is really nice. The fit and finish make the top trim the leader of the class. The knobs and switches have a texture aluminum making it easy to grip and has a nice feel

  • Steering wheel has a nice girth to it and is a pleasure to hold onto. I love how the steering is also fully heated instead of partially like many other brands.

  • Has different drive modes for eco, normal, mud, snow, gravel, and tarmac

  • Infotainment quality is in line with what the majority of the mainstream brands are providing

  • Digital instrument cluster is very nice to have

  • 360 parking cameras turn off too quickly. I live in a small condo parking lot and prefer having it on till I exit the garage. The camera automatically turns off once you go above 10km/hr. It would be nice to double the limit to 20km/hr.

INTERIOR FOR PASSENGERS: 7/10

  • Has a massive sunroof to let in tons of light in the rear

  • Has manual window shades

  • The little pockets on the front seats is a clever way to provide extra storage.

  • Lots of legroom in the 2nd row.

  • The third row can only be used in emergency short trips. When the 3rd row is in use, it greatly reduces 2nd row legroom

INTERIOR STORAGE: 8/10

  • With the third row down there’s a really good amount of cargo space!

  • 11.7 Cu Ft of trunk cargo space behind the third row

  • 33.5 Cu Ft with 3rd row folded

  • 79.7 Cu Ft with 2nd & 3rd row folded

OVERALL IMPRESSION OF THE 2022 Mitsubishi outlander:

It’s easy to see why the Outlander is the best selling name plate for Mitsubishi. The all new 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander levels up from the past generation in a huge way. The new cabin is really premium compared to the outgoing Outlander and the exterior styling gives me Range Rover vibes in the front and BMW vibes in the rear. The selling feature they use to differentiate itself from the competition is that it’s a 7 seater but to be completely honest the 3rd row is virtually useless. It’s more for emergency use rather than daily. I would opt to not have a third row to lower the curb weight if possible.

The engine and transmission is the weakest area of the Outlander. It would benefit from having more powerful engine options as I found it difficult to overtake other vehicles and lane change. Because of that I would wait for the PHEV version which will give it a bit of a boost plus save you money at the gas pump. The PHEV version would be one of my top picks in this class!
